This book turned out to be so much better than I thought it would be.

I've been binge reading over the past week (I've been home sick) and this is the 2nd book of Michelle Reid's I've read. Sometimes Harlequin Presents books are a hit or miss, storytelling abilities vary widely, so does the grammar, or depth of the plot. Sometimes these reprints from the 1990s are horribly dated with old romantic norms that aren't accepted to the modern reader.

I liked the other book I read by Michelle, so I picked this one up. Began to read, and HATED it. The Hero seemed like a pushover, a little bit dithering here and there in the opening scene. I think I put the book down at 14% and wasn't going to come back.

But then I ran out of other books to read and I ended up circling back around and thought I'd give it another chance, and BOY-Oh-BOY, am I glad I did. I hate spoilers, so let me just say, that for those of us who LOVE to read a book with a strong, decisive, Alpha, billionaire Hero, who is also capable of softness, kindness and love, then THIS is the book for you. :)

He shaped up quite nicely, I'm happy to say. In fact, now that I know the storyline, I'm going to re-read it for subtext and throw-away comments that I missed on the first time through. :)

Thought I'd write this review, because I was mistaken. And I'd hate for others to miss out on the book because of a similar mistake.

Grammar was great. Storyline and plot had depth. There were some typos, likely from the scanning software they used to bring the book back into print.

Marriage on the Rebound Michelle Reid 9780373119738 Books Reviews

I could hardly put it down! I loved it and definitely recommend it. The two main characters have hot, passionate, chemistry between them, great dialogue and a believable storyline, plus a couple of very sweet moments. You can tell, he is just crazy about her right from the start. It's a keeper for me.
I recently started reading Ms. Reid's books. This starts with the bride being jilted just two hours before the ceremony. The bearer of the bad news is the older brother of the bridegroom. To help the girl save face, the older brother proposes himself as a substitute groom. The book is better than it sounds. Of course there is a HEA. Enjoy the book.
This book started off in a very emotional way. The h is jilted on her wedding day, minutes before walking down the aisle. She finds out that she was jilted from the H who is her fiancé's brother. The author does an amazing job of describing the wedding day. You feel every bit of the brides pain. You can comprehend her disorientation and displacement of her anger. Does the H take unfair advantage? I think not. He knew he was the right man for the job and acted accordingly. I will reread this book many times over the course of my life. It is that good!
I didn't think I would enjoy this one as much as I did. The h is engaged to the H's younger brother, and the h is jilted on her wedding day. The H is there to pick up the pieces and he ends up marrying her instead. The rest of the story is how they fall in love and work out some not too terribly interesting twists.

I have re-read this a few times, and can recommend it.
Pros
- The writer is very skillful, and brings the locations (Hong Kong in particular) brilliantly to life and kept me invested enough in the story of two really damaged people to finish the book.
- The best friend character, who is the only sane person in the book, was fun to have around, if only as a novelty. For some reason in this kind of Harlequin novel (older Mediterranean man meets meek, mild virgin) there are almost never any decent parents, siblings or friends around- they tend to be populated by horrible people (my suspicion is that with a solid 60% of the genre having one person with a lick of sense around would make it impossible for the stories to happen as written).
- The setting was really dramatic and intense. I genuinely wanted to know what would happen next- all credit is given to the writer for ensuring that.

Cons
- The hero's actions are absolutely ridiculous. Him loving her from the beginning is sweet enough (I guess), but bullying a severely traumatized 22-year old into marriage is really heartless, no matter what the circumstances. I think that the setting merited a longer book, one which would have fully fleshed out the consequences of his actions instead of moving directly into the HEA (a la Susan Mallery- she does a GREAT job writing heroes who have to redeem themselves).
- I have to agree with another reviewer, the heroine really is spineless. I know she's traumatized, but to let the brother of the man who you feel ruined and defiled you take your life over makes absolutely no sense. At all. She has no ambitions and is totally content to let pretty much everyone else in the book run her life. She's pretty, but not particularly smart, savvy or in possession of large amounts of common sense. Total doormat.

I enjoyed reading this book, and even re-read it when I was done, so I could see if the ending stood up. It did. Unfortunately the hero and heroine just aren't really up to par- there is no way to cure the massive case of plot-convenient stupidity that the book rests on to keep moving. I'd recommend it if you love this author particularly, but otherwise you are ok taking a pass on this.
This was a generic book that had no anything to it. It was SO boring....the only reason I finished reading it was because I had hoped it would get better if I stuck with it, and I am retired..I have no money to waste on books even though they are precious to me. I have read several Michelle Reid's books and thoroughly enjoyed them. This was not one. Romance books are somewhat of an addiction for me, but if authors don't start figuring out some way to write a ROMANCE where the heroine falls in LUST and let's the hero walk ALL OVER HER BECAUSE HE DOES HER SO WELL, I just might have to go COLD TURKEY!!! There has to be a way for a woman to stand up for herself......have a backbone and still have good sex. I don't know if I have enough love or lust that MY HUSBAND COULD TELL ME TO GET OUT OF HIS(!!!) HOUSE WITHOUT GOING EVEN IF I DIDN'T STAY GONE. Oh yeah my two stars is because I had to give Michelle something.
