I forced my way through only part of this book. Finally, I hated it so much that I gave in. The writing quality is poor and the plot absurd. Ms. Romig clearly needs a refresher in remedial English. Her inability to use pronouns is enough to cross my eyes. I'm not looking for poetry in women's fiction, but (spoiler alert) the notion of a rape victim falling in love with the man who brutalized her? No thank you. I don't care how you sow it, the idea is just offensive. Maybe Ms. Romig has never been wronged in her life, but for those of us who have, you never, ever fall in love with your rapist. I don't care how great his abs are.

Where do I start?? This book is awful in my opinion. Here's why
First thing I noticed is that the dialogue is stilted and robotic. Characters, especially Anthony, don't often use contractions in their dialogue. This makes for horrible flow and pulls you out of the narrative because it's odd and disconcerting.
Secondly, the characters are flat, unrealistic, and don't behave in ways that actual humans would. Anthony is completely flat, which is pretty darn hard to pull off considering he's a psychopath. How can a psychopath be that uninteresting? I don't know but he's got nothing on Claire. Hoo boy. Anthony does HORRIBLE criminal things to her and I'll omit her eventual reaction to avoid spoilers but I was appalled. Also, she had ample opportunities to escape and didn't bother. I was out at that point.
Lastly, this book was never ending and lasted far, FAR too long. It has FIFTY FIVE chapters and about 40 of them are completely inconsequential. Just dull and repetitive and ridiculous.
The last 1% was the only thing good about the book. Claire was week and spineless taking metal, physical and emotional abuse and accepting blame for the abuse.
Anthony was a prick. I never saw one redeeming quality to understand why the h would stay with him. I struggled to finish the first book and will not continue with the series.

The abuse to the h was bad enough but the writing was more in the styling of telling you not actually showing you who the characters were for over 500 pages. It was excruciating.
A brief summary of “Consequences” is in order here because I reference it throughout my review Claire Nichols was drugged, kidnapped, and imprisoned. During her stay at Anthony Rawlings’ home, she was raped multiple times, severely beaten into a coma and psychologically scarred by Anthony Rawlings into submission and dependency. In addition, Anthony Rawlings destroyed her brother-in-law’s career and had him imprisoned, isolated Claire from her sister and almost destroyed their relationship, he was involved in the death of Claire’s ex and her parents, and finally he set up his own attempted murder to frame his wife resulting in her incarceration in prison besmirching her name in the media and destroying her reputation among their friends. She was in prison and thanks to Tony, she basically had no one.

Okay…here we go again down the rabbit hole. Thanks to a dying governor and a persistent attorney, Claire was given a pardon and released from prison. She fled Iowa to find sanctuary in California with her late ex’s former fiancée and her brother. She had no one she could trust in Iowa, all of her friends were financially tied to Tony, and any contact she had with them was hidden. Anthony Rawlings is a true psychopath and my opinion really didn’t change with book two. He wants to dominate and control everyone, uphold appearances at all costs, and destroy those who get in his way. His behavior does not seem to have changed; instead, he seems to be trying a new method to getting Claire back and finds her newfound confidence and independence sexy…her fight to gain control of her life once again is like foreplay for him. But his final motivation is to get her back any way possible.

The idea of chess pieces is played out – on the cover and repeated throughout the book. It still remains a puzzle even though by the end most of the players are now exposed. There are still questions to be answered and I won’t spoil them here, but there is a reckoning coming, our players are just biding time right now.

The main negative I found was all of the jumping – sometimes it would start with a new chapter and other times it was within the chapter. We have perspectives from Claire, Tony, and two other storylines happening – an extensive flashback much more developed than it was in “Consequences.” We also have the character of Sophia, who was briefly introduced in the epilogue. She is a part of everything but she and her husband Derek would frequently take away from the momentum. Everybody is intertwined, it's a huge web of deceit, lies, money, power, and scandal. Claire can’t trust anyone and by seeing so much of the book through her eyes, neither can we. I still don’t know who’s a good guy because they change on a dime.
Again, this book and author like to come up in recommendations for erotic romance, but there is little sex here, more fade to black than anything. It’s definitely not erotica or romance, but more of al mystery or psychological thriller. The writing remains excellent if a little verbose and long at times. We still get all the details about everyone’s clothing and accessories, and I know everyone’s eye color by heart lol! Like its predecessor, “Truth” could use some editing just to tighten it up, it feels overly long. I predicted the outcome quite early on about who was behind it all, so there weren’t too many shocks for me. I still believe Claire is under Anthony’s thrall; she has to be compartmentalizing to forget everything that he has done (see first paragraph). I don’t know or see how she can rationalize it all away and potentially forgive him. Even with the discovery of his parent’s bodies and his dysfunctional family, it does not justify his adult behavior. He has truly made Claire psychologically dependent on him even when she has the chance to get away.

Judging by the size of book three, it’s probably going to be more of the not-much-happens then it all happens at once that the first two books have been, but I have to know the end. I am truly addicted to this series even when its infuriating and you want one or both main characters to suffer.
This book is an OCD reader’s nightmare. The use of quotation marks around every individual sentence in many conversations, even when the same person was still speaking, was irretrievably distracting at best and incredibly annoying. Inconsistent capitalizations, missing words and punctuation throughout, the use of italics for anything of a name brand, the obvious sycophancy for the Drumpf name — all of these would have ruined even a book with a decent story line. Sadly, this book lacked that much, too. The “relationship” between Claire and Anthony was disturbing and gross, and should have ended the first time she had a chance to run. That the entire book was a journey into their twisted excuse for a romance was off-putting in more ways than I can even count here. I read to the end of this to find out what she would do to avenge herself, but instead was met with nothing. He was already on to the next one. All told, I’m seriously pissed about the five hours of my life I can’t get back after reading this terrible mess. Would not recommend or ever read again.
